Fowl Plague History The Netherlands
In the beginning of march the first outbreak of the fowl plague was in
the south of the province Limburg in a breeding centre of chickens.
The south of the province is geograhically situated close to the
Belgian and the German border. The Minister of the department of
Agriculture decided in order to get controll of the situation that it
was forbidden for organising and participating in any pigeon races in
their own country and in other countries such as Belgium, Germany,
Luxemburg and France. Positive element in the whole Ducht Fowl Plague
was that the racing pigeons where not in the statute of the other
birds such as chickens and turkeys so they don’t have to be
eliminated. Negative was that the Dutch pigeon fanciers couldn’t get
started with their pigeon season and that the Dutch pigeon sport has
been hold hostage of the fowl plague the whole time untill now. And
that the LNV is very harsh in negotiating with the NPO so that the
situation in the Netherlands seems to be very difficult to start again
racing untill the fowl plague will be under total control.
